This competition was held on the sunny afternoon of Saturday 12th June at the Cranbury Park campsite. Five teams of six Cubs competed for the Bainbrigge Shield by completing challenges set on each of six bases. See Pictures below. These included :- A Fire lighting base as part of the Outdoor challenge, where Cubs were challenged to make a fire out of the materials provided-some of which were not suitable, such as green wood. A First Aid base where a casualty, daubed in fake blood, lay at the base of a tree where he had “fallen” and was subjected to the Cubs attempts at First Aid. Many thanks go to Cub Harvey Lambourne who fell out of the tree five times! A Fitness base involved much throwing (and running after) balls and thanks to Carl Hunter who helped his dad run the base. A Safety base involved asking Cubs how they would make phone calls to the Emergency Services and keep their houses safe from burglars. A Creative base involved cutting out and assembling skeletons. Some of the resultant life forms were definitely not human!
The current shield dates back to 1984, but this is the third shield in the series which dates back to the 1920’s, and was given to Eastleigh District by Miss Bainbrigge, who was GSL to the 6th Eastleigh (later 1st Chandler’s Ford when the District was formed). The Cubs were quite impressed to be part of such a long history. Cecily Casey ADC Cubs
