We are please to report on the recent visit to the UK by Canon Dr. San Ndimbo from The St Annes Hospital, Liuli, Tanzania. He was in the UK to makeseveral visits and popped into St Boniface to meet Derek & Julie Bourne representing the 5th (now 1st) Chandlers Ford Scout Group, to thank them for the work they did sending Christmas Boxes out for their children. This project led to all the leaders and young people at the 5th getting their International Friendship award.

Bainbrigge Competition Report.

On Saturday 14th June, seven Packs from all five Groups in the District competed for the Bainbrigge Shield at Cranbury Park.

We were lucky enough to have bright sunshine for most of the afternoon and the Cubs were able to enjoy themselves. Each Pack ran a base selected from the Challenge Badges so that all aspects of Scouting were covered.

The 1st Tuesday ran the “Outdoor” base and the teams of Cubs had quite a challenge to get the 4-person dome tent erected and packed away in the ten minute slot.

The 4th Wednesday Pack ran a First Aid base, which was much enjoyed as it involved large amounts of fake blood, and a “body” provided by a Scout who bravely allowed himself to be transported on a makeshift stretcher whilst covered in bandages!

The most popular Base was run by the Explorer Unit, who brought water rockets which reached quite remarkable heights when pumped up by enthusiastic Cubs –who got wet in the backwash from the launch. I heard one Cub complain loudly about getting wet, then clamour to be next to launch another rocket!

Other bases involved matching flags and emblems to their countries on the map, home safety and dribbling footballs around a course on the Fitness base run by the 2nd.

After a busy afternoon the cubs formed up to find out who had won. The Competition was very close, with only 17 points between the teams (Out of a possible maximum score of 140 points) in 3rd place was 3rd Wednesday who had won the Shield in 2006, 2nd place was taken by Cubs for the 2nd, and in Joint 1st place with identical scores were the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Monday Packs who will each have the Shield to display for 6 months.

Every team went away with a certificate showing their place presented by the ADC Cubs, who also presented “Thank You” certificates to the ESU and Fellowship for all their help in running the event.

AND FROM ONE OF OUR CUBS....

I am writing on behalf of all the cub scouts from the 1st Chandlers Ford pack who came joint first place with 3rd Wednesday at the Bainbrigge Shield competition.

The challenge is about going round several bases and getting marked on behaviour, knowledge and skill. The base you went to first was the base that was run by your leaders, and after a couple of minutes we got started, but because our leaders were on this base we weren’t getting marked. Then we went round several bases including a Fitness base, Saints and Countries, First Aid and a fun base. The fun base was run by some Explorer Scouts and was basically water rockets and getting wet! Because that was our last base we went home very wet! As we had the shield presentation I kept on thinking we were going to be next but when we came first I was astonished. Shame we drew with 3rd Wednesday though.

BEAVER CRAFT COMPETITION craft 4

On Saturday March 8th several teams of Beavers met up at the Scout Hut in Kings Road for the annual craft competition. This year there were 8 teams of very "eager Beavers". Kanga read the story of "the Beaver and the Echo" and then all the teams were asked to make the characters of the Beaver, the Otter, the Turtle and the duck.

Lots of imagination was used to turn socks, paper plates, wooden spoons and tissue paper into some wonderful puppet characters. All the teams worked hard. They were expertly judged by Silver Beaver and his wife who awarded points for team work, what they produced and (most important) clearing up afterwards!

The result was very close with more than one team coming second and third but the winners were a team of 2 Conor and Keir from 15th Chandlers Ford.
Conor said "it was not the winning that mattered but doing our best". Keir was really thrilled they won saying "I can't believe it I thought we might come second or third". Raksha, the leader of the 15th said she was proud of all those who entered.
Everyone had a great time and thank you to all those who organised, helped and especially to the Beavers who came and did their best
